It has been said that a smile is the first thing people notice about you. We have so many reasons to smile; family, friends, pets, jobs, and so much more. We want to know what makes you smile. Share your best story with us about what makes you smile and be entered into our Smile Contest.

Your story can be about anything! We want to hear about the different things each of you smiles about.  Send us your story via Facebook. Deadline for submissions is May 31st.

Summer is coming! Soon kids everywhere will be out of school, families will take that long-desired vacation and everyone will enjoy the sun and freedom of summertime. Unfortunately, this is usually a bad time for oral hygiene.  It is very common for us to consume cold items such as ice cream and beverages which can cause harmful effects on our teeth and mouth. But don’t worry! We have compiled a few tips to let you enjoy summer and not worry about your next trip to the dentist!

1.       Protect your teeth: Whatever you do this summer, do not assume your teeth can be used as a tool to open bottles, chew on wrappers or ice. Also, if you are participating in any sports, be sure to wear a mouth guard. These injuries can be very painful and costly, so stick to only using your teeth to break down food!

2.       Eat sweet treats in moderation: A yummy ice cream cone or cold soda are very tempting during the summer months, but the high amounts of sugar in them can cause loss of enamel, cavities, and plaque if consumed consistently.  You can keep your teeth in tip-top shape after consuming sweets by swishing with water, chewing sugarless gum, or brushing your teeth.

3.       Stay hydrated: Water not only does the body good, but it’s also great for your teeth and mouth. In the hot summer months, be sure to consume enough water so you don’t get dehydrated.

Around here, we take teeth seriously.  But some of these facts just make us laugh out loud! Did you know some of these? Do you agree with them?

·         32% of Americans cite bad breath as the least attractive trait of their co-workers.

·         38.5 total days an average American spends brushing teeth over lifetime- Over a month of our lives are spent brushing teeth!

·         73% of Americans would rather go grocery shopping than floss!???

·         Dentists have recommended that a toothbrush be kept at least six (6) feet away from a toilet to avoid airborne particles resulting from the flush. Yuck!

·         A toothpick is the object most often choked on by Americans.

·         Every year, kids in North America spend close to half a billion dollars on chewing gum.

·         Only 40% of young people age 6 to 19 had ever in their lives had cavities. That’s down from 50% a decade ago. J

·         More people use blue toothbrushes than red ones. (Mine is green!)

·         The average woman smiles about 62 times a day! A man? Only 8! (Smile guys!)

·         Kids laugh around 400 times a day, Grown-ups just 15. (One of the many valuable lessons we can learn from children!)

·         Smilers in school yearbooks are more likely to have successful careers and marriages than poker faced peers.

·         More than 51 million hours of school are lost each year by children due to dental related illness.

·         Just 40% of children in poor or near-poor poverty level had a preventive dental visit in the past year.

·         Energy drinks have 11% more sugar than regular soda. (Whoa- that’s a lot of sugar!)

With the recent events that have occurred, it is easy to be afraid, to lose hope and positivity. This week and looking forward, I want to inspire you to focus on what is important and find hope in each situation.

Everyone is different, but we can all agree that the most important things in life cannot be bought. Enjoy life with family, friends, and everyone you love and care for each day. Don’t let things drag you down. Keep your head up high and follow your dreams. The heart of America lives within each of us. Let’s us do our best to show it in tragic situations and every day that follows.

We continue to send our thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by the Boston explosions.
